The Lonely Continent
For more than two centuries, Walsh has been the jewel of the Garic States, one of the most productive and pleasant places to live in all of Urda. The plains surrounding the city are fertile—so fertile, in fact, that some scholars have searched (unsuccessfully) for magical qualities in the dirt itself—and Walsh is in a prime location for trade with Manse and Areen, as well as other cities in the Garic Federation. The “battle colleges” of Walsh are famous across the continent for producing fine mercenaries and soldiers, and the city is home to many prosperous and well-respected sellsword companies. Historically, the citizens of Walsh have always been blessed with safety and prosperity.
These days, however, Walsh is a city in recovery. Two years ago, instantly and without warning, the entire city was cut off by a massive, dome-shaped field of powerful magic similar to the great barrier that surrounds all of Urda. For almost six months Walsh was completely inaccessible; when the force-field finally collapsed, more than a fifth of the population had died of starvation, disease, and worse. The cause of the “Walsh Crisis” has never been determined, but it is believed that the force-field was dispelled by one Namani Se, a high-ranking mage of the Râd Gûl who disappeared at the same time the field was finally lifted.
